On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, Lindsay Miller Barranco from the vanEnglesdorp Bee Lab at the University of Maryland spoke on the importance of bees, native bees and honey bees. The program covered:
- a description of native bees (both ground nesting and tube nesting),
- what individuals can do to enhance their environments through floral plantings and optimizing sites for native bee nesting,
- challenges native bees and honey bees face, and
- the history and biology of honey bee colonies and how they are utilized in commercial agriculture for pollination in the U.S.
This webinar is part one of a two part series. Part 2, ‘Are Pollinators Being Supported in Newton?‘, will be held on Thursday, April 27 at 7pm and will be a presentation on how well Newton is doing in supporting our native bees and pollinators, and features speaker Professor Richard Primack.
