PROBLEM: Take-out containers made of both plastic and Styrofoam are often hard to recycle. For instance, black plastic takeout containers confuse the optical sorters that separate materials at recycling facilities. The material captured from clear plastic containers is not typically marketable for recyclers, and the cost to transport Styrofoam outweighs the material’s worth.
SOLUTION: Switch to durable, reusable containers that can be washed and used again, and again, and again. Bring these containers to restaurants when you are eating out to avoid needing to use a single-use take out container.
