Plastic bags continue to be the number one problem in Newton’s green recycle bins. Plastic bags bind up machinery at the sorting facility, which decreases efficiency, increases costs, and creates a safety risk to workers.
The City of Newton is embarking on an initiative to educate residents and lower the contamination rate. The City received a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection to fund a robust education campaign, and to inspect what’s in the recycling carts and to communicate that information to residents.
This week, the City began performing curbside inspections of residential recycling carts. Contaminated carts will receive a warning and specific feedback on what issue was found.
