In the single stream recycling process, plastic items are sorted using optical scanners, which use the reflection of light to identify the types of plastic. Black doesn’t reflect light, so it cannot be seen and sorted properly by the scanners. As a result, black plastic items end up being sorted incorrectly, contaminating other materials. Please reuse these containers or dispose of in your trash. Better yet, bring your own reusable container with you for take-out food orders or to restaurants to use for take-home leftovers.
Karen Bray, GN Board member, has created the following helpful guide:
The following Newton restaurants have agreed previously that patrons may bring their own containers for take-out food. (Please ask before ordering.):
- Sichuan Gourmet – Newton Highlands
- Four Spoons – Newton Center
- Rox Diner – Newtonville
- Los Amigos Taqueria – Newtonville
- LeDuc Thai Eatery – Newtonville (only at non-busy times)
- Boca Bella Cafe and Restaurant – West Newton
- Cheesecake Factory – Chestnut Hill
You must order take-out food in person, at the counter, not on the phone.
Bring your containers with you when you order.
Containers do not have to match, they do not have to be beautiful, they just have to be clean and appropriate in size to accommodate the take-away food you are ordering.
Also, please remember to bring a leftover container when you eat in at restaurants as well!
