Let nature do the work as you grow your flowers, trees, shrubs, and/or vegetables. Sustainable gardening mirrors natural processes by recycling materials and minimizing energy use and waste. In this hands-on course, you’ll try out sustainable techniques in our instructor’s home garden. You’ll make compost the easy way by converting free materials found close to home into soil-building mulch; view easy-to-grow native perennials in bloom and see how they support a wildlife-friendly backyard environment; and discover how a gardening approach based on current science eliminates unnecessary work and expense. Spare your back and your wallet as you apply your environmental principles for a beautiful backyard garden.

The instructor, Rebecca Warner, is a geriatric psychiatrist whose avocation has always been gardening. Returning to Massachusetts after college and medical school in the Midwest, she settled in Newton and started her home garden 33 years ago. Over the years, with lots wrong turns along the way, she gradually traveled the path toward making a beautiful garden that’s also environmentally friendly. Her book The Sustainable-Enough Garden, published in 2016, tells the story of her gardening journey. Rebecca is a speaker for the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts and has spoken at 20 garden clubs and libraries in the last two years. Check out her weekly blog at thesustainable-enoughgarden.blogspot.com.
