The City of Newton held the first Pumpkin Smash on Saturday, November 2. The event was a fun family activity where visitors were encouraged to give it their all in destroying their leftover Halloween jack-o-lanterns. The pumpkins were then taken for composting by Black Earth Compost, the City’s partner in residential compost pickup. It was also a chance for parents and kids to learn about composting and waste reduction. We diverted roughly ten tons of pumpkins from trash disposal, and had over 750 attendees!

Director of Newton’s Sutainable Materials Management, Waneta Trabert, manages the destruction.

A rare chance to use a pumpkin for target practice with your parent’s permission!
