The New England Aquarium Gift Shop sells plush stuffed animals, plastic toys and other single-use plastic items which are marketed to families with children. The sale of these products violates the very mission of the aquarium:
New England Aquarium is a catalyst for global change through public engagement, commitment to marine animal conservation, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy for vital and vibrant oceans. We inspire others to make choices to protect the blue planet.
On July 20, 2023, Beyond Plastics Greater Boston members met with New England Aquarium staff members: Suzanne Matus, Vice President of Marketing, Sales, and Visitor Experience, Letise LaFeir, Chief of Conservation and Stewardship and James Sutherland, Associate Vice President, Public Policy & Advocacy, to discuss the conflict between the aquarium’s mission and the continued sale of plastic and polyester items. Plastic is not effectively recyclable and ends up littering the ocean, being burned in incinerators or buried in landfills. Four months after the meeting, no specific action plan has been shared.
We know a single-use plastic free aquarium gift shop is possible. Following an audit in 2016, Monterey Bay Aquarium began implementing a transition away from plastic packaged items and plastic toys.
We want to see a plan for the New England Aquarium outlining how staff will transition the gift shop into a place that no longer contributes to plastic pollution in the oceans, land, and air but that will instead offer sustainable and non-toxic products; especially for the youngest visitors.
Please sign the petition urging the New England Aquarium Gift Shop to stop selling plastic packaged objects and to make a plan for transitioning to a shop which aligns with their mission and vision.
