Since we’re all spending way more time at home, some lights might be left on longer and electric appliances are being used more often. This might result in an increase in electric bills. The following energy saving measures are recommended by the nonprofit organization Environment America.
- Avoid screensavers on your home computers and television. Use low power or sleep modes instead.
- Fully power down electronics when you are done using them. TVs, cable boxes, or video game consoles use more energy in “standby mode” than they do in active use.
- Unplug your chargers when you aren’t charging. Chargers continue to draw energy even when they aren’t connected to a device.
- Unplug your microwave when you are done using it or turn down its brightness setting. The average microwave uses more power displaying the time in one year than it does heating your food.
