Currently, more than 80% of bottles with deposits are redeemed / recycled, compared with less than 23% of non-deposit bottles. A YES vote on Question #2 will reduce litter by updating the 1982 Bottle Bill law to include five cent deposits on water bottles and sports drinks that often litter our streets, waterways and parks. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection estimates that an updated Bottle Bill will save our cities and towns about $6.7 million a year—or an average of $1 per resident in our state– in litter pick up and trash disposal costs. It also will mean less waste that will go into landfills and incinerators.
