New seasonal electricity rates are available to all residential electric customers in Massachusetts who use at least one heat pump for heating. (Electricity in Newton is delivered by Eversource.) This includes both owners as well as renters who receive their own electric bill. The new seasonal discounted rates are a reduction in transmission and distribution rates during the heating season (November – April). The electricity supply rate is not affected. In order to qualify, your home or apartment must include at least one heat pump for heating. The discount applies to your entire electric bill (not just the portion used for heating).
Both owners and renters with at least one heat pump in the residence are eligible for the reduced rate starting November 1. The discount is about 7.5 cents per Kwh, and is expected to save the average family about 20% over rates without heat pump heating according to this estimate. In most cases, enrollment is automatic, and there is nothing that needs to be done, as long as the building owner installed the heat pump in 2019 or later and received a rebate through the MassSave program. If not, the owner of the building will need to provide verification that a heat pump is used for heating, and Eversource should be contacted after November 1 for verification in order to receive the discounted rate.
