In the July 11, 2024 opinion piece “Massachusetts Residents’ Health Depends on Fossil Fuel-Free Buildings” on the non-profit news site Energy News Network, authors Lisa Cunningham and Dr. Wynne Armand equate the persistent residential use of fossil fuels to the use of lead paint. Even though the negative health impacts of lead in paint were well-known for hundreds of years, it was not banned until 1978. “Just as we no longer allow lead paint in our homes, we must build healthier, more affordable homes without fossil fuels,” they write. But as special interest groups prevented safety regulations from being implemented regarding lead, out-of-state special interest groups working against policies that allow communities to move toward clean energy and better health.
