Newton’s City Council Public Facilities Committee will continue a public hearing on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:30pm regarding a petition from National Grid to install approximately $15,000,000 of new gas pipes in Newton streets. Please show up, observe, and take advantage of the opportunity to speak your opinion about this wasteful proposal.

Instead of installing new gas pipes, the cost of the projects could pay for the repair of all current Newton gas leaks and leave enough to completely electrify about 270 Newton homes. Putting the price tag in context, Newton’s new senior center (Cooper Center) is being built for $20,000,000. National Grid’s proposal to spend $15,000,000 should go towards retirement of the gas system, not its upgrading.

You can attend on zoom or in person. Here is a link to the agenda which includes details of which streets are affected and the zoom link to the meeting.

At a previous hearing on the same topic (link to AFWOG’s report on the hearing), the Committee delayed a vote on the petition in order to obtain answers to questions raised by its members and the public.
