Climate change action is two-fold: mitigation, i.e. trying to prevent it by reducing and eventually eliminating the burning of fossil fuels; and adaptation, i.e. adapting to climate change to protect people, property and the environment from the impacts that are already here and coming. (Increasingly we see the term “resilience” used instead of adaptation.)
Even if we stopped burning fossil fuels tomorrow, many impacts are already here, including hotter summers, more frequent drought, increased flooding, and more. All these impacts are detailed in the April 2018 Climate Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation and Resiliency Action Plan. What is Newton already doing to protect its residents and properties from the weather extremes of climate change, and what more could – and should – we be doing?
