Green America’s chocolate scorecard included a few new brands that are leaders. This nonprofit organization “harnesses economic power—the strength of consumers, investors, businesses, and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.” The scorecard’s ratings are based on efforts to combat child labor, but they have added a new category on deforestation, one of the many issues facing the cocoa industry.
As large chocolate companies continue to explore and refine how they can go beyond certification to improve the lives of farmers, fair trade and direct trade chocolate companies have been placing farmers front and center of their business models for years.
