Before you crank up the old air conditioner, here are some tips from Eversource to keep your home cool while saving energy at the same time:
- Heat pumps aren’t just for heating. Did you know that heat pumps are an energy-efficient and quiet alternative to room and window air conditioners? Heat pumps concentrate and move heat from your home to the outdoors, providing you cool, dry comfort while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Keep an eye on your thermostat. You can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat up 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day from its typical setting during the summer and lowering it during winter. You can purchase a smart thermostat to take further control.
- Close your blinds in the daytime. Southern- and western-facing walls take the brunt of the sun’s heat, so invest in good drapes or shades for the windows on these walls and keep them closed. North-facing windows admit even, natural light, producing little glare and almost no unwanted summer heat gain. Leave these shades open to allow natural light in without heating things up.
