In a recent study published in the journal Nature Medicine, small fragments of plastics were found to have crossed the blood brain barrier into the brains of human cadavers, and the brains may contain about seven grams of plastic – the same weight as a plastic spoon.
The concentrations of plastics in the human brain rose by about 50 percent between 2016 and 2024 while plastic production doubled every 10 to 15 years. The obvious response to this growing health problem is that we have to reduce the production, use and disposal of plastics.
