Small Actions, Big Impact

Key Benefits
The fashion industry generates 92 million tons of textile waste annually, with 85% of this ending up in landfills.
How to Rethink Consumption
Ready to rethink what you buy and use? Discover how small changes in daily habits can create a more sustainable Newton.
Refusing unnecessary items is one of the most effective ways to reduce waste before it starts. Say no to single-use plastics like straws, plastic utensils, and shopping bags, and avoid products with excessive packaging whenever possible. You can also refuse junk mail, promotional freebies, or disposable promotional items that you don’t need. By consciously choosing what not to bring into your home, you reduce clutter, save resources, and make a meaningful impact on the environment.
Being a thoughtful shopper is a powerful way to reduce waste before it’s even created. Buy only what you truly need to avoid clutter and excess disposal. Prioritize quality over quantity by choosing durable items that last longer, which reduces the frequency of replacements. Whenever possible, consider second-hand or gently used items — from clothing and furniture to electronics — to give products a second life and keep them out of the waste stream. Small, intentional choices when shopping can make a big impact on both your wallet and the environment.
Choosing eco-friendly products is one of the simplest ways to reduce your environmental footprint. Look for reusable items like water bottles, shopping bags, and food containers instead of single-use plastics. Consider low-impact products made from sustainable or recycled materials, such as bamboo utensils, refillable cleaning supplies, or energy-efficient electronics. Whenever possible, choose compostable or biodegradable items for things like packaging, utensils, or food waste bags. These choices help conserve resources, reduce pollution, and keep more materials out of landfills — all while making your daily routines more sustainable.
The Resource Recovery Center is located at 115 Rumford Ave. and offers several opportunities to reuse items rather than throw them away. Read more on the City of Newtons website.
Swap Shop
Bring your clean, usable household items and give them a second life — or take something you need for free! From housewares and toys to clothing, games, and small furnishings, there’s always something new to discover. All items must be in good condition and approved by our volunteers.
Newton Book Shed
Drop off clean, gently used books, or come take books at no cost.
The Newton Free Library offers so much more than books: thanks to their Library of Things, you can borrow nontraditional items — from tools and tech to games and musical instruments — free with your library card. It’s a smart way to try something new, access what you need only when you need it, and reduce overall consumption by sharing instead of owning.
Here are just a few of the things you can check out: Sewing machine, garden tool set, cornhole set, drum kit (acoustic), induction cooktop kit, blood pressure monitor, banjo with accessories, puzzle mat or large puzzle set, digital microscope, and board games (100+ available).
Borrowing these items helps you save money, try something once without buying, and support a more sustainable lifestyle.
