Founded in 1990 by environmental pioneer Louise Bruyn, Green Newton has spent more than 35 years empowering our community to live sustainably and protect the planet we share.
Building a Sustainable Newton
What began as a small group of local activists has grown into a citywide movement—one that collaborates with residents, schools, businesses, and city leaders to turn environmental awareness into meaningful action. From our earliest days, our mission has remained constant: to create practical, community-focused solutions to the climate challenges facing Newton and the world.

Decades of Leadership in Environmental Action

Over the decades, we’ve evolved to meet the moment—expanding our programs, forging new partnerships, and embracing innovative technologies to reduce our collective footprint. Today, our work spans clean energy, waste reduction, community engagement, urban ecology, advocacy, and youth leadership. Through education, collaboration, and action, Green Newton continues to inspire households and the next generation to make sustainable choices—ensuring that Newton’s future is vibrant, connected, and sustainable for generations
to come.

Green Newton believes that meaningful impact requires sustaining partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including political leaders, educators, scientists, other nonprofits, businesses, government officials, and Newton residents of all ages.
Green Newton believes that all people deserve a healthy environment and pledges to use our political and economic power to include all voices when advocating for policies and programs, including the young and the elderly, disabled people, low income people and historically disenfranchised people.
Green Newton believes that to be effective our work must be guided by science and communicated transparently and openly to our community, our members, and ourselves.
