Saturday, November 4 from 3-5:30pm. Newton North High School cafeteria (457 Walnut St, Newtonville).
Newton voters who want to learn more about their 2023 City Council and School Committee candidates in the upcoming municipal elections are invited to attend Saturday Night at the Races. The event, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Newton, Newton North High School Center for Civic Engagement and Service (NNHS CCES), along with several other Newton organizations, will give voters an opportunity to meet candidates from across the city and ask them about their positions on issues facing Newton. All 2023 Newton candidates have been invited to participate in this event, whether or not they have a challenger.
Tables to represent each ward will be set up with about 20 chairs encircling each table. Each of the city councilors running for office in that ward who is able to attend the event will be seated at the table and available to answer voters’ questions. Two moderators assigned by LWVN and CCES, chosen from NNHS CCES and other co-sponsoring non-partisan Newton organizations, will be present at each table to make sure all voters have a chance to ask their questions and each candidate has an equal opportunity to speak. The moderators will be asked to briefly introduce themselves at the beginning of each round and explain guidelines, i.e. each voter will be requested to limit their questions to enable other voters to participate.
Voters are given approximately 12 minutes at each table before they are signaled to move on to another table. Each voter will have an opportunity to visit with the city council candidates from each ward as well as the school committee candidates.
