Newton is fortunate to have many exceptional leaders dedicated to protecting both our natural resources and the well-being of our community at this critical time for the environmentAt the Environmental Leadership Celebration on September 19, we will recognize our honorees with our 2024 Louise Bruyn Awards, celebrating their inspiring commitment to environmental stewardship, as well as the hard work of our entire community.

Kay Khan • MA State Representative, 11th Middlesex

Alicia Bowman • Former Newton City Councilor

  • Alicia Bowman is celebrated for her deep commitment to environmental sustainability, including her advocacy for building electrification, climate action, pollinator protection, and safe, sustainable transportation, which have significantly enhanced the community’s quality of life.

Deb Crossley • Former Newton City Councilor

  • Deb Crossley is celebrated for her 14 years of outstanding public service and leadership, including her pivotal role in expanding the stretch code, revitalizing Newton’s water system, and crafting a visionary zoning plan to enhance sustainable development.

  • Green Newton honors Shara Ertel and Fulfilled Goods, Newton’s only zero-waste store and refill station, for championing environmentally sustainable lifestyles, and offering goods that significantly reduce packaging waste and promote sustainable consumer habits.

Friends of Cold Spring Park • Stewards of Cold Spring Park

  • Friends of Cold Spring Park is honored for its tireless work in enhancing the park’s biodiversity, climate resilience, and accessibility through native plantings, invasive species removal, and improved walkability.
