Green Newton

The Newton North High School carpentry department is giving students the opportunity to learn the principles of high performance building construction. The project will engage around 30 students on technical, social and environmental levels as they construct a sustainably fabricated high performance tiny home that can be used as temporary housing for the homeless.

Green Newton has committed a $5,000 donation match to jumpstart fundraising efforts for this worthy project to educate our youth for the future.

Increasingly, cities around the country (including Newton) are adopting new buildings codes that require higher energy standards. Building these high performance buildings involve novel construction technologies. According to Garrett Tingle, the NNHS carpentry teacher who is spearheading the project, “As students deepen their knowledge of building‘s best practices relative to new methodologies, stretch codes, greener materials and more, they will apply this learning to the most current building guidelines, while using repurposed and new building materials, insulation as called for, and ultimately come up with a ‘Pretty Good Tiny House.’” The department will collaborate with Shattuck Hospital and Commonwealth Care Alliance Tiny Home Village to locate the temporary housing for the homeless.
