Thursday, October 31 from 12-1:30pm. Online.
The Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA) Implementation Advisory Committee will hold a virtual public meeting to discuss the Commission on Energy Infrastructure Siting and Permitting, the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Coordinating Council (EVICC), and a memo on Holistic Land Use. The meeting will include a public comment section at 1:20pm.
The IAC advises the State’s Energy and Environmental Affairs on priorities and policies to reach Massachusetts GHG emission goals. Its meetings provide the public an opportunity to follow and comment on the State’s GHG emission reduction plans.
Background
In 2008, Governor Deval Patrick signed The Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA) into law. The GWSA requires Massachusetts to set economy-wide goals to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at least 80 percent below 1990 GHG emission levels by 2050.
GHG emissions are measured in nine sectors: residential fuel, commercial fuel, industrial fuel, electric power, transportation, natural gas systems, industrial processes, agriculture, and waste. Between 1990 and 2020, the state recorded a 31% decline in GHG emissions. The State has yet to report GHG emissions beyond 2020.
The Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs formed the GWSA Implementation Advisory Committee in 2012 to bring together business and community leaders to advise the State on achieving its GHG reduction goals. Currently, there are eighteen members on the Implementation Advisory Committee, including representatives from MassAudubon, Conservation Law Foundation, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, and Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company.
