Wednesday, September 13 from 7:30-9pm. Online.
The meeting with Newton Legislators is an opportunity for both old and new members and other constituents to meet with Senator Cynthia Creem, Representative Kay Khan and Representative Ruth Balser. We will share legislative updates and strategies for supporting MOF’s 2023 – 2024 climate action priorities.
Gas is not safe, not clean, not green. Since 2017, Mothers Out Front Newton has been raising awareness of Newton’s hundreds of unrepaired gas leaks from old pipelines under our streets. We advocate at the city and state level for Triage and Transition, a strategic approach to fixing the largest and most dangerous gas leaks and prioritizing leak repairs over pipelined replacements. Mothers Out Front’s Clean Heat Clean Air campaign provides a library of information and resources to promote the switch from fossil fuels to clean energy.
September 13 will also be an opportunity to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Merrimack Valley Disaster. It was a series of gas explosions and fires in Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover that damaged or destroyed more than 130 homes and businesses. Eighteen-year-old Leonel Rondon was killed, 30,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes and 8,000 people were displaced for months.
Remembering the Merrimack Valley Disaster gives us a heightened sense of urgency to reduce the danger and waste of the gas system and to support legislation that will provide the safety and economic benefits of clean non-combusting energy. The September 13 meeting is dedicated to building relationships with our state policy makers and to working together for sustainable solutions to the climate crisis.
