Newton Homeowner Cuts Energy Bills by 80% with Solar and Heat Pumps

What if your household energy bills were just 20% of what they used to be? That’s the experience of one Newton homeowner after installing solar panels and a ground-source heat pump system. Their 24-panel solar array now produces about 90% of their home’s electricity needs, including the electricity used to run the heat pumps. Combined with using less natural gas, their total energy bills have dropped by approximately 80%.

Getting there wasn’t entirely straightforward. The home has a slate roof, and most solar companies wouldn’t install panels on it. After some searching, they found a company with a patented system designed for slate roofs – and were finally able to make solar work for their home.
