Saturday, October 4, 6:30–9pm. American Legion Nonantum Post 440 (295 California St., Newton).

At this year’s Environmental Leadership Celebration, Green Newton is proud to honor three leaders who embody the many ways climate action thrives in our community — from shaping citywide policy to building grassroots movements and creating opportunities for neighbors to live more sustainably.

JOIN THE CELEBRATION

Councilor Andreae Downs has spent her years on the City Council championing Newton’s Climate Action Plan and working to make the city more livable and connected. Whether expanding bike lanes, protecting biodiversity, or promoting sustainable housing, Andreae has been a steady voice for a healthier, safer, and more resilient Newton.

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller has made clean energy a cornerstone of her administration. Under her leadership, Newton Power Choice now provides residents with 95% renewable electricity. The city has joined the state’s Fossil Fuel Free Demonstration Program, and new municipal buildings are setting the standard with all-electric and geothermal systems — a visible sign of what a fossil-free future can look like.

Peter Smith, one of Green Newton’s co-founders, reminds us that lasting change comes from persistence. For 35 years, Peter has given his time and talent to Green Newton, editing newsletters, collaborating with businesses to cut energy use, and sparking partnerships that led to today’s annual GreenEXPO. His work has connected countless residents with solutions for living more sustainably.

Together, Andreae, Ruthanne, and Peter show the power of leadership at every level — inside government, across the city, and within our own community. Their efforts have laid the foundation for a cleaner, healthier Newton, and we’re thrilled to celebrate them.
