Tip of the Week: Beat the Heat with these Cool Tips

  • Keep shades and curtains closed during daylight hours, especially for south and east facing windows.
  • Avoid heating up your kitchen by cooking on your outdoor grill.
  • Pre-cool your house earlier in the day and avoid using air conditioning from 4-8pm when there is a huge demand on the power grid which leads to increased fossil fuel consumption. Oftentimes, the New England power system sees demand peaking just as solar power production diminishes at dusk and it’s still hot. “Peaks” on a given summer day refers to the hour that demand was highest (for example, 6pm).
  • Consider adding insulation to your home as this will help keep the heat out and the cool in.
