What Did the Bigelow Middle School Green Team Do this Year?

Crista Cavicchio is a grade 8 special educator and a Green Team Captain at Bigelow Middle School. She sent in a list of all the sustainability related projects the school achieved during the 2025-2026 school year. Congratulations and thank you, to Christa and her team for all their hard work!
  • First Wednesday Walk and Roll with Starburst incentive for kids who use sustainable transportation to school
  • Educational poster making and posting May is Bike Month Raffle!
  • Collect floor pencils (Green team–every three days)
  • Collect cafeteria cans and bottles (Green team–every three days)
  • Bike count (Green team–every three days)
  • Fruit collection/food diversion every Wednesday (diverted over 1,000 pieces of fruit from the trash over5 months)
  • Recycling Fridays (weather permitting–done by students)
  • Recycle audit/”grades” (with two winning classrooms)
  • Planted milkweed
  • Earth Month Data Bulletin Board showing data from surveys and collections (pencils, cans, bikes, fruit)
  • Grounds clean up and invasive plant removal
  • Clean up Courtyard–in progress
  • Educational flyers with videos for next year and upcoming Green Team members (ie: how to recycle etc.)–in progress
  • End of year Locker Cleanout Day with Donation Bin (TBD)
