Yes, incentives still exist for heat pumps, new windows

If your car or computer broke down, you wouldn’t replace it quickly with the same make and model. Then why do people rush to install an obsolete boiler or hot water system with the same capacity and fuel source?

When these systems fail, property owners need them restored fast, and that can lead to short-term decisions – with comparable equipment, the same fuels and no discussion of other connected issues such as capacity, pipes and device locations, says Sam Wallace, who has led dozens of home updates for Lavallee Systems.

Making smarter decisions for the long-run can save money, deliver better performance and increase convenience. Electric upgrades also offer environmental benefits while taking up less space in your house.

Here are some options to be ready, when it’s time to upgrade or before an outage:

Make Your Plan B Now – Look at current devices that are 10-12 years old in your home. You’ll be ready with budget, priorities and estimated timetable that leads to smarter, organized upgrades.
Ask Trend or History Questions – How has your use of the building changed? Do you plan to sell the property? Have capacity needs gotten larger – or smaller – as your family schedule changes? A water heater or zoned heat/cool system can reduce waste or adapt to use – not just the size – of a home or work space.

“Energy Star-certified appliances and heat pump upgrades are some options still available for 2026,” says Wallace. “Although federal credits are over, many projects can take advantage of manufacturing incentives or state-based tax credits that can lower the overall price tag, while also reducing monthly operating costs.”

Summer is often when “Aha!” moments occur, Wallace says, because in hot weather, the limits of air conditioning systems are more noticeable and expose problem areas for indoor air quality. Also, it can be difficult to cool down if you’re uncomfortable compared with colder months when you might just reach for a warm drink or jacket.

A hot, humid stretch of weather can expose weak spots in a home or office, he adds, because cold air sinks, making upper levels warmer – revealing hotspots that might be less obvious while a heating system is working properly in fall or winter.
