On September 8, Massachusetts Climate Action Network (MCAN) launched the Carbon Goals Tracker, a powerful new tool for Massachusetts communities. The free tracker helps communities set goals for the residential adoption of three key technologies–electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps (HPs) and roof solar installations (PVs)–and then evaluates and track their progress toward decarbonization. Massachusetts is under a mandate to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030 (relative to 1990). In 2020, the “Mass Decarbonization Road Map” identified the number of EVs, HPs, and PVs that must be installed by 2030 to meet this target. In order to make up for the slow progression to date, Massachusetts must adopt this year and each year thereafter, the equivalent of 90% of the number of EV registered by the end of 2024, 50% of the number of HPS installed, and 10% of solar installation capacity. In the tracker, the suggested goals for each community are derived from these Massachusetts targets, based on the status of each at the end of the most recent year for which data are available (2022-2024).
Earlier this year, MCAN launched another relevant tool for communities, Inventory of GHG Emissions, which reports GHG emissions in each Massachusetts city and town.
