Science vs. Corporate Greed. Ibsen’s play, An Enemy of the People, written in 1882, rings as true today as it did over a century ago. Dr. Stockmann, a respected physician and scientist, has discovered that the town’s famed medicinal health spa is being fed by poisoned waters. Instead of being thanked for his findings, the mayor, local businessmen, and the press cry “Fake News,” denounce his story, and put a positive spin on the benefits of the health resort.
At its core, the play asks who gets to control the truth when science, public health, and political power collide, and how decisions get made when the wealthy and well-connected have the most to lose. From 1882 to 2026, the play’s questions are still very much our own.
