Here are some reminders, reprinted from The GreenBin, the recycling e-newsletter from the City of Newton Environmental Affairs Division in the Department of Public Works.

RIGID PLASTICS are accepted for recycling at the Recycling Depot at Rumford Ave. Mixed rigid plastics (MRP) include such items as plastic lawn furniture, kids’ toys and play structures, and plastic barrels and buckets (NO vinyl siding or PVC pipes). MRP and metal items are not collected curbside as bulk trash items. You will need to bring MRP and metal items to the Recycling Depot for recycling. Click here for a brochure.

SCRAP METAL is accepted for recycling at the Depot. Bulky metal items are not accepted as part of bulky item collection per Massachusetts State Waste Bans. You
will need to bring bulky metal items to the Depot for recycling. (You can also schedule a curbside collection of metal items with our Appliance/Metal/Electronics vendor, CRT Recycling.)

EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE (aka “Styrofoam”)
is accepted for recycling at the Depot. This includes items such as meat trays, coffee cups, and packaging pieces. No spongy foam pieces, please. Please place clean polystyrene in bags and keep separate from other packaging materials. No packing peanuts, plastic
film, cardboard, or trash should be mixed with the polystyrene when dropped off.

ELECTRONICS can be recycled at the Depot on the 3rd Friday and Saturday of each month from 8am-12pm. Residents can bring old electronics (anything with a plug!) for recycling free of charge. Computer monitors and TVs are accepted for $18 each. Businesses and non- profits also welcome. Upcoming Collections: October 17/18, November 14/15, and December 19/20. You can also schedule a curbside pickup for a fee or check out retailers and manufacturers who accept electronics for recycling at no charge.
