The 350 MA Newton Node and Green Newton are grateful to our Newton City Councilors for passing a resolution, submitted by Councilor Alison Leary, to support legislation creating the Massachusett Climate Change Superfund. The Superfund bill (H1014/S588) would require the largest polluters to pay into a “Superfund” that would help communities fund climate adaptation and resiliency projects. The council vote on October 6 was 23 in favor, with one councilor absent.

Newton joins nine other municipalities (Boston, Cambridge, Medford, Malden, Northampton, Brookline, Somerville, Greenfield & Pittsfield) that have also passed resolutions supporting the Climate Change Superfund legislation.

On Tuesday, October 21, climate activists, (including some 350 MA Newton members) delivered over 7,500 petition signatures supporting the Climate Change Superfund bill to Governor Healey, House Speaker Mariano, Senate President Spilka, and the Environment and Natural Resources Committee. A rally in front of the Massachusetts State House included ‘a giant floating oil drum’ emblazoned with the slogan “Make Polluters Pay” and banners illustrating one future where taxpayers pay and one where polluters do.  The Climate Change Superfund bill would require the largest polluters to pay into a “Superfund” that communities could tap into to help fund climate adaptation and resiliency projects.
