On March 6, Resolutions to support state bills on “carbon pricing” and “divesting from fossil fuels from the state pension fund” were passed by the the Newton City Council (Click here and scroll down to pp. 55-59). Thanks to all those who called city councilors to show their support of this vote!Scientists agree that 350 ppm of carbon in the atmosphere is considered safe, but now the level exceeds 400 ppm. This means we must take steps to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. While symbolic, the Resolutions are affirmations that our community cares about the dangers of climate change. Passing these Resolutions would add Newton to the list of cities and towns taking this stand, and it will make it easier for our legislators to convince other legislators to support Carbon Pricing and Divestment from Fossil Fuels.
