The aluminum cans that are used to hold craft beers are very recyclable, but have you noticed the plastic ‘toppers’ that hold a pack together? These cannot be placed into the curbside recycling bins because they are too flat to be captured by the sorting machines and end up contaminating paper. Contaminated paper gets thrown out as trash, defeating the efforts of residents who recycle. A recent WBUR article discusses these toppers and what is being done to make packaging for beer more sustainable.
