At Green Newton, several key committees work towards advancing sustainability initiatives within the city. One of those is the Marketing Committee, which focuses on expanding Green Newton’s reach both digitally and in-person while generating excitement around its mission. Through strategic research and campaigns, the team ensures that environmental initiatives connect with the right audiences. Their work emphasizes sustainability education, helping residents transition to clean energy, adopt eco-friendly practices like composting, and support the City of Newton’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

One of the key members of Green Newton’s Marketing Committee, Karen Kipman, has played an instrumental role in outreach and advocacy. A board member for four years, she joined to contribute her skills to the community while reinforcing her passion for sustainability. Throughout her time with Green Newton, she has been inspired by the power of collective action to encourage greener lifestyles.

Reflecting on Green Newton’s many community events, Kipman recalls the first Earth Day Festival in Newton as a defining moment. Leading up to the event, the team was unsure of how many people would be interested in attending. They were thrilled to find out that hundreds of community members and their families would gather to celebrate, “It was a beautiful moment where the entire community came together, united in celebrating Earth Day. It was so positive and inspiring to really feel like Green Newton, alongside our peers, was making a meaningful impact on the local community.”

The Marketing Committee has already made significant strides, including expanding Green Newton’s digital presence and creating engaging content to drive environmental action. One of the committee’s most recent and impactful initiatives has been the launch of the Green Pages – a directory of local providers that can help residents make their homes more sustainable. Looking ahead, the team aims to further broaden Green Newton’s reach through stronger messaging, launch a new website later this year, and to continue expanding the marketing team.

Kipman stated, “It’s an exciting time at Green Newton! With so many initiatives to pursue, the team is hoping to recruit volunteers with a diverse range of skills to help us spread awareness, engage the community and promote initiatives that drive environmental action. Whether you’re interested in content creation, outreach, or simply passionate about sustainability, volunteering with the Marketing Committee is a great opportunity to gain experience and make a difference in Newton.”
