Mothers Out Front (MOF) is looking for volunteers to help tag gas leaks in Newton on Saturday May 12 at 1pm (rain date May 19).  Meet at the front steps of Newton City Hall (1000 Commonwealth Ave., Newton) and no experience is necessary.

Newton has 600 natural gas leaks containing methane that contributes to climate change, harms our health, kills trees and poses a safety hazard. The powerful pollutant, methane, is 86 times more potent than carbon dioxide on a 20-year time scale. While National Grid is working with the City of Newton to fix some of the biggest leaks, the utilities pass the cost of this waste on to us, the customers. We pay up to $135 million every year in Massachusetts (2013 Sen. Markey study). In the Boston area alone, the value of lost gas is $90 million, enough to heat 200,000 homes (2015 PNAS Harvard/Boston University McKain study).
