On August 8, 2016, Massachusetts took a step towards diversifying our energy supply and meeting our greenhouse gas reduction mandates when Governor Baker signed into law “An Act to Promote Energy Diversity.” The signing ceremony took place on the State House lawn and was attended by Speaker DeLeo, Energy Committee Chairman Senator Ben Downing and Rep. Tom Golden, Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Beaton as well as other officials and legislators. The law includes a number of significant provisions that require utilities to enter into long term contracts to secure offshore wind and hydropower. In addition, the legislation supports efforts to advance energy storage, includes provisions to repair natural gas leaks, and allows companies to finance clean energy projects through tax assessments.

Green Newton, the Environmental League of Massachusetts and many other groups congratulate the legislature for their hard work on this important legislation and thank the Governor and administration for their support of the final bill.
