How can we apply lessons learned from last fall’s Merrimack Valley gas disaster? TONIGHT– Monday, October 21 at 7pm at the Newton Free Library (330 Homer St. Newton), Boston University Professor Nathan Phillips will speak on developing methods for Massachusetts municipalities to effectively inventory and build household electric capacity and street-scale geothermal capacity across diverse housing stock and communities. The goals are to provide disaster responders with information about which houses are able to switch to electric-based heating/ cooking in the event of future potential gas outages, and to prioritize electric upgrades and street-scale ground source heat solutions in municipal housing stock for permanent electrification to meet aggressive climate action plans as proposed in Newton.
Nathan Phillips is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at Boston University, and is Director of BU Earth House Living Learning Community. Dr. Phillips’s research has been in areas of climate science, physiological ecology, global change biology, natural gas, and infrastructure ecology.
