SUMMARY:Spotted Lanternfly: Impact\, Current Status\, and Management Options
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Barnes will present the latest information about the spotted lanternfly\, an invasive insect that feeds on over 100 plant species and is an agricultural and nuisance pest. In addition to killing grapes\, black walnut saplings\, and Ailanthus saplings\, they also are a major nuisance pest in yards\, parks\, and outdoor venues. This presentation will cover the issues they cause\, their current distribution\, and an overview of management options. \nElizabeth is the Forest Pest Outreach Coordinator with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources and previously worked as the Exotic Forest Pest Educator at Purdue University. She received her doctorate in plant-insect interactions from the University of Denver\, where she studied tent caterpillars and fall webworms. \nRegister

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday May 12\, 2026 \n5pm–7pm \nNewton Free Library\n330 Homer Street\, Newton\nRoom A \n\nJoin the City of Newton’s Climate Action Coordinator and Green Newton’s Energy Advocate for drop-in energy office hours. If you have questions about your energy bills\, heating and cooling options\, available assistance programs\, or electrification\, we can provide one-on-one help in a friendly setting. Residents and local businesses can bring their energy bill for an optional review to learn about ways to reduce costs. \n\n\nNo technical knowledge is needed\, and there is no pressure to sign up for anything. Drop in anytime between 5pm and 7pm and meet us at Room A across from the Drucker auditorium to get personalized guidance\, ask questions\, and connect with trusted local resources. This event is hosted by the City of Newton Climate & Sustainability Team\, Green Newton\, and Newton Free Library. \nThis event takes place on the second Tuesday of May and June.  Upcoming sessions include May 12 (5- 7pm) and June 9 (3-5pm).

SUMMARY:Exploring the Impact of Plastic in Reproductive Health
DESCRIPTION:Are microplastics decreasing our fertility? The dangers of using plastics have an unprecedented health toll on fertility\, puberty\, and much more. The documentary The Plastic Detox\, that debuted on Netflix on March 16\, 2026\, follows six couples with unexplained infertility as they take steps to reduce their exposure to plastics in the hopes it will help them conceive. It also follows the research of Dr. Swan and other experts in the field\, covering the impact on human development and showing how we can take matters into our own hands. \nBeyond Plastics will host a free webinar about the film with the director Louie Psihoyos; Shanna Swan\, PhD\, a scientist featured in the film; and Eric and Julie Isaac\, one of the couples featured in the film. \nRegister
