SUMMARY:The Approaching MA Climate Bill Showdown
DESCRIPTION:The State Senate will imminently take up this session’s major climate bill. Despite many positive provisions\, Massachusetts Climate Action Network (MCAN) has concerns; the largest is that the House version includes a devastating $1 billion cut to Mass Save. Climate advocates must mobilize now to ensure that the bill that ends up on the Governor’s desk contains the best provisions possible. \nMCAN is proud to have Dan Zackin and Mark Dyen of 350 Mass provide a virtual presentation on pressing legislative developments and how you can help ensure Massachusetts remains a leader on climate action. \nThe first hour will consist of the program with a Q&A session\, and then we will open the floor to discussion until 1:30. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Workshop: Build Your Own Self-Watering Veggie Planter
DESCRIPTION:Fulfilled Goods is all about reusing and repurposing existing materials vs. tossing them in a landfill. Many of the products in the refillery come in 5 gallon buckets. The empties are usually sent back to their closed-loop partners to clean and reuse\, but this time around they are holding on to them for global buckets – a self-watering planter made from 5 gallon buckets. \nJoin the Fulfilled Goods team and Farmer Tim (the store’s CSA partner*) as he demonstrates how to build a global bucket. You’ll be provided all the supplies you need including composted soil courtesy of Black Earth Composting. Farmer Tim will be bringing a variety of tomato\, pepper\, and eggplant plants from his greenhouse for you to choose from. You’ll go home with your own self-watering planter ready to go! (or rather\, ready to GROW! ) \nWorkshop cost: $35 \n*Interested in locally grown veggies all summer? There are still spots left in the CSA. ($540 for 20 weeks; pickup on Wednesdays at Fulfilled Goods)

SUMMARY:Learnings from Initial Restoration Efforts in Newton’s Central and Largest Park
DESCRIPTION:Climate change can already feel overwhelming\, and now we have a biodiversity crisis\, too? \nCan local conservation in our own parks and yards make a real difference in protecting wildlife\, strengthening forest health\, slowing climate change\, and improving nature’s ability to adapt? Using Cold Spring Park restoration efforts as a case study\, we will highlight what we are learning from new and ongoing projects to restore native ecosystems and avoid catastrophic ecological tipping points. \nJoin us to learn why acting locally matters\, what’s working\, how you can apply this information in your own yard\, and how we can create a model for building community to ensure healthy and vibrant natural areas for our wildlife\, ourselves\, and future generations. This webinar will feature three presenters: \n\nAlan Nogee\, President of Friends of Cold Spring Park and Newton Conservators Board Member\nZach Shein\, who has worked with Parterre Ecological and the Arnold Arboretum and did much of the research for the Natural Resource and Biodiversity Management Plan\nDr. Jon Regosin\, former Deputy Director of Massachusetts Fish & Wildlife and Newton Conservators’ Board Member\n\nIf you have questions\, please contact Webinars@newtonconservators.org. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Little Bugs in the Big City: Urban Pollinator Habitat Gardening
DESCRIPTION:With urban real estate at such a premium\, how do our smallest neighbors – especially pollinating insects – make their way? What can we do to help them survive and thrive? In the concrete jungle\, is it worth it to even try? Over two decades\, speaker Chris Kreussling has transformed a barren conventional landscape into a vibrant example of urban gardening for biodiversity. Using their garden as an example\, they will review some typical challenges for urban gardeners and explain how to find and create habitat opportunities in city gardens. \nChris Kreussling (Flatbush Gardener)\, a New York Master Naturalist and Certified Interpretive Guide\, has gardened in NYC for 45 years. In their current small Brooklyn garden\, they grow over 150 NYC-native plant species\, and documented over 500 insect species. \nRegister

SUMMARY:How Toronto is Leading on Embodied Carbon Reduction
DESCRIPTION:Since 2023\, Toronto has led the continent with a simple yet powerful standard in new construction. Their Green Standard has limited the embodied carbon intensity (ECI) in all new municipal buildings. What can climate advocates learn from the “Toronto approach” and how can it inform policy in Massachusetts? \nJoin Mass Climate Action Network (MCAN) for a virtual presentation by Ryan Zizzo on an overview of Toronto embodied carbon policy\, how it came to be\, and tips for future policy development. Program with Q&A for the first hour\, then open discussion until 1:30. \nRyan Zizzo is the Founder and CEO of Mantle Climate\, a Toronto-based consultancy focused on climate-smart infrastructure and buildings. His work directly supported an embodied carbon update to the Toronto Green Standard. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Housing and Climate with Dan Ruben
DESCRIPTION:We need to think about the intersection of climate change and housing beyond our HVAC systems. How does climate change affect housing costs\, particularly in the face of growing migration? How does housing affect climate change\, particularly as we seek to build new units? How can changes to zoning laws affect greenhouse gas emissions and save trees? \nDan Ruben teaches Sustainable Hospitality and Sustainable Tourism at Boston University and the University of Southern Maine. He wrote the textbook\, “Sustainable Hospitality.” Dan is also the Chair of Green Newton. He leads its Building Standards Committee which persuaded developers to build Passive House\, all-electric\, low embodied carbon developments\, and persuaded the City of Newton to upgrade its sustainability requirements for new buildings. \nRSVP
