The City of Newton will be collecting Christmas trees for recycling through January 14. Place your un-decorated Christmas tree out to the curb by 7am on your collection day during this two week window. All decorations and lights must be removed and trees cannot be in a plastic bag.

If you missed the Christmas tree pickup, please request a pickup request using 311 or by calling Customer Service at 617-796-1000. Alternatively, residents can wait until April and prepare the tree according to yard waste guidelines.

Or Leave it for the Goats…

Councilor Emily Norton reported in her latest email newsletter that she dropped her Christmas tree off at Unity Farm Sanctuary in Sherborn as a ‘tasty treat’ for their animals. See the recent Boston Globe article on farms that accept donations of Christmas trees.

There are a few ground rules for donations:

  • There cannot be tinsel, ornaments, doodads, baubles, or anything else still on the branches.
  • The trees can’t have browning needles
  • They should be free of sprays, pesticides, fire-retardant, or any sort of fake-snow coating. If you’re unsure of the origins of your tree, contact the seller if possible.

In most cases, you’ve got to take the tree to the goats.
